The 8-bed Seastone Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) High Intensity Environment for Dorset HealthCare, provides a secure and dignified setting for the treatment of patients aged 12–18 that display highly complex and challenging behaviours. Taking advantage of the steeply sloping site and woodland setting, the building is located on an existing plateau, elevating patient accommodation to create a direct connection with the surrounding trees.

Delivered under the NHS New Hospital Programme, the building has been designed to support safety and wellbeing. Clear zoning enables patients to co-exist harmoniously, with opportunities for separation to de-escalate tension. Patient bedrooms provide a safe sanctuary with large secure windows and generous window seats offering a viewing point to the natural surroundings and wildlife.

The Wye Valley Community Diagnostic and Treatment Centre for Wye Valley NHS Trust is part of the national programme to increase NHS diagnostic capacity closer to peoples’ homes. Designed through a collaborative partnership between sustainability experts Architype, healthcare specialists Medical Architecture and innovation-led contractor Speller Metcalfe, the project delivers a highly sustainable, patient-centred facility that combines design excellence with outstanding programme delivery.

Featuring a fully factory-manufactured Structural Insulated Panel (SIPs) superstructure, complemented by offsite-manufacturing, the component-led approach improved build quality, reduced construction time by 6–8 weeks and achieved savings of approximately £200/m², while delivering excellent airtightness and thermal performance.

“These awards are recognition for the excellent teams that have come together to deliver these two very different, but important facilities. Both projects represent novel approaches to their building type, supported by ambitious clients that were willing to tread new ground in the pursuit of truly patient-centred environments.”
