Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery – Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), Newcastle

The Dental Hospital was purpose built on the RVI Hospital site in 1978 and at this time was perhaps the most modern, integrated medical/dental campus in the UK. It continues to be the major centre of specialist dental services for the northern region, treating adults and children who are referred for expert dental care and advice.

The completion of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Hospital marks the end of a long awaited refurbishment of this important department. It is the first piece of major capital investment in the Dental Hospital since its inception, providing reconfiguration of some of the key spaces, allowing the clinical environment to be overhauled and dramatically improved.

Provision was made for 4 assessment rooms, 14 dental surgery rooms, recovery bays, new waiting rooms and improved support areas, all within an existing footprint. Contractor, Robertson completed the build for a net construction cost of £1.72m.

The scheme is one of the first capital projects to incorporate the Trust’s new design templates developed by Medical Architecture. Working alongside the capital and estates teams, a series of standard specifications and design items were developed and approved allowing future capital projects to follow a similar pattern, establishing a ‘brand’ and a standard going forward.

Getting the simple things right is really important when space is tight, so making sure each of the room’s fitted furniture was well planned and considered makes the clinical teams’ jobs easier. The quality of the spaces was elevated with attention to detail such as well crafted reception desks and staff bases, excellent signage and localised use of colour. Staff moving into the refurbished space were genuinely surprised how large the spaces felt with many thinking the building had been extended.

The finished project creates a high quality professional environment where staff feel valued and the clinical setting now matches the outstanding service they provide for their patients.

“Great job by Medical Architecture, what a transformation from the 1978 design. Super environment and fantastic for the staff and patients.” – Rob Smith, Director of Estates, The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
