Integrated care centre wins European award for sustainable development
The Jean Bishop Integrated Care Centre has received the highly coveted Design for Sustainable Development Award at the European Healthcare Design Awards 2024, demonstrating its lasting impact and value.
The award recognises an exemplar healthcare project completed over 5 years ago that has demonstrated fitness for purpose, flexibility and high performance over time, adapting to new service configurations and meeting international standards in sustainability, including social, economic, human and environmental factors. We retain the award for the second year running, having received the prize in 2023 for Clock View Hospital.
Completed in 2018, The Jean Bishop Integrated Care Centre is the first of a new class of NHS facilities to cater for the needs of an increasingly elderly population, providing out of hospital care and reducing the need for hospital admission. Adopting an entirely new way of delivering health services, the centre brings together a range of specialist services to provide a more holistic approach to health, care, and social support.
A study led by a team of researchers from the Wolfson Palliative Care Research Centre at the University of Hull and published in 2023, concluded that frail patients treated here (who could expect to go to A&E more than three times a year) were 50% less likely to need emergency treatment.
In preparation for our submission, we returned to the building to gather the perspectives of staff and patients, and we thank them hugely for their insight. It was clear to see that the building is well loved and cared for, and that it is providing a welcoming and uplifting environment for care.
They are very welcoming and efficient with everything. I don’t think you could ask for a better place. It’s perfect. I like coming here.
It’s a wonderful place to work, both in terms in terms of the care that we were able to deliver, but then also really blessed to have a lovely building that has been specifically designed for our older people that we’re caring for.
Patients will often tell us that when they arrive here, that they feel welcomed into a warm building that doesn’t feel clinical. And it helps relax people to engage in those clinical conversations that are essential to improve the lives of all the people affected by frailty and for the support of their families.
To add to the good news, two more of our projects received recognition at the awards.
Designed in collaboration with Architype, our Cavell Passivhaus Community Health and Wellbeing Hub was Highly Commended in the Future Healthcare Design category. This recognises future projects that can demonstrate the potential for outstanding outcomes, in alignment with the strategic requirements to transform health services, regionally or nationally.
Kimmeridge Court Eating Disorders Unit was then Highly Commended in the Mental Health Design category. This recognises mental health projects that, through innovative design thinking, balance the need for a humanistic environment for patient recovery, with the requirements for appropriate levels of safety, security and supervision.
Our thanks to all those involved in supporting these three submissions, and to each project team for their excellent contributions to the design process.
To receive this accolade for the second year running is special, and it underlines our commitment to the design of buildings that have long lasting impact. The Jean Bishop ICC is a wonderful place, and an outstanding example of partnership and integrated working, which wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of all project stakeholders. It is clear to see the care taken to maintain the positive environment for patients, staff and carers, and we have no doubt that the building will continue to deliver long into the future.
