The Jean Bishop Integrated Care Centre in Hull has been named as a finalist in the Architecture Today Awards for buildings that have stood the test of time.

The awards recognise projects that have been in use for at least three years, and which can demonstrate a strong track record for delivering on their environmental, functional, community and cultural ambitions.

Completed in 2018, The Jean Bishop Integrated Care Centre is the first of a new class of NHS facilities to cater for the needs of an increasingly elderly population, providing out of hospital care and reducing the need for hospital admission. Adopting an entirely new way of delivering health services, the centre brings together a range of specialist services to provide a more holistic approach to health, care, and social support.

Waiting spaces have been designed to be open and comfortable, with views to the outdoors.

A study led by researchers from the Wolfson Palliative Care Research Centre at the University of Hull, concluded that the frailest cohort of patients treated at the centre, were 50% less likely to need emergency treatment in the twelve months that followed.

The building will now compete with two other finalists in the Healthcare category designed by Foster & Partners and AHMM. All three will be presented to a live jury at an event held in London on 18 September, with the winner announced in November.

We are delighted that this special building has been shortlisted for this award. Integration of care and services is often talked about in the NHS, but unfortunately there are few examples where it has been achieved to its full potential. The Jean Bishop Centre is definitely one, and it is always a pleasure to visit and see the outstanding work that is being done there, and the way the building design continues to support that.
