Whitby Hospital Redevelopment starts on site

We are excited to announce that work has started on the £13m redevelopment of Whitby Hospital. Once complete this will enable NHS Property Services, which owns the site, and Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust, the main service provider, to offer a new health and social care hub for the North Yorkshire region.

The new setting will provide integrated delivery of care, including primary and secondary care along with community services. The aim is to bridge the gap between home and specialist hospital care, through the delivery of both outpatient and inpatient services closer to home in Whitby.

Medical Architecture’s design incorporated the existing hospital ‘tower’ which is being comprehensively refurbished and modernised, along with a purpose-built extension providing a new entrance to the consolidated hospital, with better accessibility for those using the steeply sloping site. The new Hospital includes an extra care facility to complement the hospital’s existing services, a new car parking area, an ambulance bay, facilities for dropping off patients, external pedestrian links, and a plaza to connect the retained hospital tower block.

NHS Property Services principal construction manager, Peter Todd said, “Our strategic teams have worked tirelessly to move us into the exciting delivery phase of the project. The completed facility will be a fantastic resource for the local people of Whitby and secure local service delivery for years to come. This will not be the first or the last.”

Medical Architecture director, Paul Yeomans said, “It’s a dynamic design which integrates well with the site and its surroundings. We are excited to see our modern take of the local hospital, as the hub of an integrated care system taking shape in Whitby.”

Main contractor, BAM Construction is delivering the project and work is expected to complete in June 2021.
