The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and The Royal Marsden Hospital NHS Foundation Trust have been working with Medical Architecture to develop the next generation of cancer research and care centres. We began by helping the Trust secure funding by engaging with potential donors, and generating potential designs of a state of the art new hospital.Recent advances in cancer diagnosis and personalised medicine require a new class of facility which brings patient care to the heart of the research community, helping to accelerate the transition of the latest advances in cancer medicine, from the researcher’s bench to the patient’s bedside.

Based in Sutton, south London, The Royal Marsden hospital will expect over 90,000 visits from cancer patients per year. Medical Architecture have been working closely with the Charity and the Trust to create a modern and comfortable patient environment. This will bring together over 300 clinical researchers and more than 300 health professionals to provide expert care in a state of the art development.

It will provide a new gateway to the Sutton campus, signalling a step change in the understanding and treatment of cancers. Its distinctive modern design will see it stand apart from health service norms, and provide a world class facility to reflect the world class treatment offered by the Royal Marsden’s clinical teams.

A further key consideration in the design was the human experience of cancer, and the emotional and psychological difficulties it presents to patients and their loved ones. This informed the reassuring, therapeutic nature of the design, and the focus on creating a very high quality facility that maximises the possibility of effective treatment.
