Project description:
Springfield University Hospital sits within one of the largest mental healthcare institutions in the UK and was one of the few remaining undeveloped 19th century county asylum estates still in use.

While the property is large (33 ha.) and is in a beautiful setting, the hospital’s mental health facilities were outdated and inadequate.  The South West London and St. George’s Mental Health NHS Trust, the hospital’s owners and operators committed to providing the best possible environment for its service users.  Enhancing the quality of life in South West London has initiated a comprehensive programme of reinvestment at Springfield estate by making creative use of the Trust’s valuable land.

Working closely with Toronto based firm, Urban Strategies and the Trust, we developed a programme to integrate modern mental health services into a new urban environment.

The involvement of stakeholders was key in developing a vision for the site and new buildings.

The completed document, the “Vision and Masterplan for Springfield Village”, presented a framework and choreographed phasing programme for rebuilding the facilities, at Springfield University Hospital, within a dynamic mixed-use setting.

Springfield Village will be a vibrant urban community, which integrates the highest calibre mental health facilities with a mix of new community, residential and commercial uses.  Safe and therapeutic buildings will replace unfit healthcare facilities. Creative reuse of listed heritage buildings, historic airing courts and other elements of the 19th century estate will ensure that these important structures are protected in future.

The Masterplan for Springfield Village was the first step in a complex and lengthy process to realise the vision for the future of mental healthcare and community regeneration in South West London.  Following the success of this partnership, Medical Architecture went on to design the award-winning Wandsworth Recovery Centre on the Springfield University Hospital campus.
