PIH Liberia Hospital

The PIH agenda is one of social justice whereby everyone, regardless of income or location, should have equal access to high quality healthcare.

Partners In Health (PIH), are a Boston based US NGO, who entered Liberia to help with the Ebola crisis in November 2014.

Following the crisis, they decided to stay to help repair and enhance the decimated healthcare infrastructure there, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of the Government of Liberia.

Medical Architecture were commissioned by PIH in October 2016, to master plan a 309-bed acute referral and teaching hospital in Harper, which is in eastern Liberia. We were then asked to design the first phase for 150 inpatients.

The new hospital will be the third of three tertiary hospitals, in what is a remote and neglected part of the country. It will serve a largely dispersed rural population of 625,000. The PIH Liberia Hospital will concentrate on Maternal and Paediatric health, and innovations in TB and Multi-Drug Resistant (MDR) TB treatment.

Medical Architecture was chosen by PIH because of its knowledge and expertise and shared ethos of designing therapeutic environments with a strong emphasis on landscape design.

Medical Architecture have assembled a team that includes Andrew Allan of Allan Consult Ltd., Bill Watts and Jasper Rea of Max Fordham LLP, and Richard Bodsworth of Cohesion Cost Consultants Ltd.

In November 2016, Andrew Allan and Bob Wills visited the site and met PIH staff. Soil samples were brought back to the UK, where Rowland Keable of Rammed Earth Consulting CIC analysed the potential for the earth construction elements of the project.

Bob Wills, director at Medical Architecture said:

“We are proud to be designing a new teaching hospital in eastern Liberia for Partners in Health.  PIH have been doing excellent work with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare since 2014, firstly to control Ebola and then to help rebuild the healthcare infrastructure in remote parts of the country.”
