New Hospital for the Ascension Islands
Medical Architecture has been commissioned to develop a concept design for a new hospital for this remote community in the South Atlantic. The existing health facilities had become dilapidated, and subsequently the Ascension Islands Government determined that a new hospital was required to support the future sustainability of this community.
The design challenge of this project is to provide a modern, high standard, sustainable health facility which can be delivered, assembled and equipped economically on a remote island, without the kind of construction or engineering infrastructure typically found in Europe. We used our experience of modular off-site assembly health buildings and our understanding derived from hospital development in hard to access regions of Africa to inform our design. The final concept was co-designed with the island health team, to provide both emergency treatment and maternal care in a high quality modern setting.
